Before choosing the perfect bridal shoes

Dear Makeover,  I’m getting married in a few weeks, and I’m not one who wears high-heels a lot. However, I know I really don’t have much of a choice when it comes to weddings, so I’m kind of stuck. I have three different shoes to pick out – the traditional, wedding and reception. Before, I buy them, what advice can you give me on enjoying wearing my shoes that day?

Worried Bride.

Dear Bride,

There really is no need to worry. It’s your big day, and you need every single reason to be happy, and three pairs of shoes shouldn’t dare hold your happiness to ransom. Find below a few tips to keep in mind when choosing your shoes:

Decide on style

Before you get carried away with the design of the shoes, it is important to know exactly which styles you would feel more comfortable wearing. You can choose from peep toes, pumps, sandals, among others. You should also be decisive on heel height as well. Don’t let the wow effect of a comfortably high-heeled pair fool you. You won’t get any wows when you eventually wear them.

It must fit perfectly

Unless you run the risk of getting swollen feet at intervals, your shoes must fit perfectly. Not too tight, not a tad-too-lose, but fit perfectly. This will discourage forming of blisters or leaving you in pain from wearing them around, possibly for the first time. You will be doing walking and dancing around in them, beyond standing still and testing them, so they must fit. If you can, before the D-day, walk around, dance, take a spin, jump, while wearing them, at the venue, where the wedding would hold, so you can get a feel of what to expect.

Comfort is everything

Even if your friends, family members have other options they would rather you choose from, unless it’s a choice that would affect you negatively, always prioritise your personal comfort. That friend of yours who loves six-inch heels would gush over a spiked-heeled alternative. If you don’t feel comfortable walking around in them, feel free to burst their bubbles. If you don’t feel comfortable enough for spiked-heels, go for their block alternatives.

Always have back-up

Even after you buy the shoes, always have a back-up pair you can use to battle unforeseen circumstances. It is not uncommon for heels to give way, or for straps to cut. If you want, have two extra pairs of shoes, which could include a wedge and flat sandals, which you can change into once the dancing is about to get serious, especially for long gowns. Some brides have been known to dance bare-footed. It’s your day anyway. Only you hold the cards to making the best of it.

College: 10 fashion items every freshman should have

WHEN in college, there are certain fashion items that every freshman should have in their wardrobe, which are necessary for the various activities they would be involved in.

For women, five items are necessary:

Jeans

Jeans are a go-to outfit for many activities. They should be of good quality and can be paired with as many kinds of tops, including T-shirts, formal shirts, tank tops, among others.

T-shirt

T-shirts are good for casual evening strolls around campus, and certain student gatherings.

Cross-body bag

Having  a cross-body bag comes in very handy. They can work for lecture halls,  casual outings, excursions, among others. They’re also very affordable.

Flat shoes

Flat shoes come with comfort, and for a student, can even be worn to formal events. The important thing is to ensure they are of top quality, so they will last long.

Make-up kit

However busy you get, looking good is a necessity for university events. Whether your kit contains the occasional powder and lip gloss, or packs shades of lipstick, eyeshadow, foundation, and the like, keep your kit handy.

For the men, five items also come in handy for college students. They are:

Jeans

A quality pair of jeans, for men, serves as many events as possible.

Wristwatch

For men, the wristwatch serves as a powerful statement, albeit unconscious. So, for students, wristwatches also serve the same purpose, aside the obvious function of telling the time.

Quality chinos

As a result of their versatile nature, chinos work better for students because they are also perfect for formal and casual events.

Dress shirt

A dress shirt, depending on how it is paired, can work for casual and formal events as well. It can be worn on jeans, chinos or even the accompanying dress pants.

Shoes, preferably, black

Black is the best option for the shoe category because the colour works with nearly every outfit colour one can think of. When choosing shoes, however, keep comfort, durability and quality in mind.
