Cholera: Jigawa intensifies environmental surveillance

Jigawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abdullahi Kainuwa said the ministry dispatched its official on surveillance to report any sign of cholera outbreaks in the state.

The commissioner made the disclosure while fielding questions to newsmen on the state’s government efforts on the recent report of the cholera outbreak in some states in the country.

Dr Abdullahi Kainuwa explained that the state government through the ministry also embarked on massive public enlightenment for prevention and to avoid the spread of the disease into the state.

According to him “So far there is no report of an outbreak of the disease. As I’m talking to you now no any symptoms of the disease in any part of this state”.

He explained that, Cholera Outbreak is one of the perennial disease outbreaks Jigawa state has been experiencing over the years, particularly during the early rainy season.

According to him, as a result of concerted efforts by the state government, National Primary Healthcare, and donor partners the occurrence and scourge of the disease was put under control in the last two years, and currently, there was no single report of any case of cholera in the state.

Dr Kainuwa added that, to forestall any possible outbreak they put their disease surveillance mechanism under alert across 287 political wards in the 27 local government areas of the state.

“We have also embarked on public campaign and awareness on the measures needed to be taken by community, particularly on person and environmental hygiene as well as avoiding drinking any unclean water”

“However, we are advocating for community to report any broken public water facility to nearest official for immediate repair, to ensure availability of clean water at all communities”,

Dr Kainuwa maintained that, for now, there is no report of cholera outbreak in the state, and they are taking all necessary measures to forestall any possible outbreak of the disease in the state.
