Chinese official urges FG to educate Nigerians more on dangers of trafficking

Published by

LUO JUN, Deputy Director-General, Foreign Affairs Office, People’s Government of Guangzhou Province, on Wednesday said there was need for the Federal Government to educate Nigerians more on the dangers of drug trafficking.

Jun, who made the assertion when he addressed a delegation of Nigerian journalists in China, confirmed that in some cases, many Nigerian citizens caught peddling drugs were ignorant of the magnitude of their offence.

“There is a need for your government to educate her citizens on the evil of peddling drugs abroad, especially in China, we frown at it.

“The volume of drugs caught on some Nigerians is over 2,000 kg, that’s a huge volume; no country will survive that much volume.

“Drug weakens the body system; it reduces the country’s productivity, so it is a serious offence when one is caught.

“In fairness, at times those caught in this act are innocent, they are used, but law is law.

“There are no two ways to this but to adhere to our laws, we don’t joke about it or compromise it for any reason,’’ he said.

Jun also said that getting a life sentence or a death sentence for drug trafficking did not mean that the individual’s life was over.

“When you get imprisoned for a drug related offence, in our prison, we allow prisoners to learn a craft.

“With good behaviour, a death sentence can be changed to a life imprisonment or freedom,’’ he said.
