China has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Nigerian women through a strategic partnership, as the world marks the 115th International Women’s Day.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai in his speech at Her Story and Future Programme to mark the International Women’s Day Celebration on Friday in Abuja, stressed the importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment, highlighting China’s dedication to strengthening cooperation with Nigeria in this area.
Dunhai also highlighted the United Nations’ theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” and acknowledged the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
He praised the remarkable achievements of women worldwide, stating that “gender has never been a barrier for human exploration” and that women are the “creators of human civilization and the drivers of social progress,” as pointed out by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Envoy also emphasized China’s commitment to gender equality, citing the country’s comprehensive legal system, which comprises over 100 laws and regulations protecting women’s rights.
He noted that Chinese women have made significant strides in various fields, accounting for nearly 45% of the total workforce and outnumbering their male counterparts in the internet sector.
He, therefore, reaffirmed China’s dedication to strengthening cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in promoting women’s exchanges and empowerment.
“I believe more women will benefit from the high-quality cooperation under the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, realizing their dreams, and creating an even more splendid future,”
“As we celebrate this happy moment together, I wish every woman and girl achieves her dreams and shines brightly.” He added.
Also speaking, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Oraeluno Raphael, stated the importance of celebrating women, saying “women need to be celebrated” because “there couldn’t have been any life without the woman.”
Raphael praised women for playing a crucial role in shaping society, noting that they have excelled in various fields, including agriculture, engineering, science, and technology.
He also acknowledged the challenges women face, saying “the weight of the problem of this world is on the back of women,” but expressed admiration for their strength and resilience.
The Acting Permanent Secretary also highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy to promote women’s empowerment, particularly in the areas of arts, culture, tourism, and creative economy.
He noted that the ministry is providing training, cultural exchanges, and other activities to support women’s development and capacity-building.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of Social Development Sccretanat o Federal Capital Territory Administration, Mrs. Olubunmi Olowookere, said the theme, Her Story, Her Future, is a reminder that every woman’s journey is a testament to resilience, courage, and the pusuit of dreams.
She added that from history to the present, women have broken barriers, challenged norms, and paved the way for future generations.
“Their voices, struggles, and triumphs have transformed societies, enriched cultures, and inspired progress. As we honor the past, we must also Commit to a future where every Woman has the opportunity to rise, lead, and thrive.”
“A future where education, equality, and empowerment are not privileges but rights.”
“A future where women’s contributions in every sphere science, business, arts, and leadership are valued and celebrated.”
“To all the women here today: your story matters. Your aspirations matter. Your future is bright and limitless.”
“May we continue to uplift, support, and champion one another in the journey ahead. And kudos to the gallant men, the “He 4 Shes” who help to Accelerate Action for gender equality,” she added.
