Presenting the equipment valued at over seven million naira to the Critical Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja, the Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Ambassador Chao Xiaoliang said the donation was part of the humanitarian effort of the Chinese government in the country.
He said the gesture was also in appreciation of the hospital’s quality healthcare services to the Chinese community in Lagos and its environs.
Ambassador Chao said the Chinese government was ready to support the hospital and even the government in critical sectors.
He stated further that “Lagos State University Teaching Hospital is one of the best hospitals in Lagos. However, we were informed that the hospital is in the urgent need for some medical equipment. So the Consulate General decided to donate one auto hematology analyzer and one semi-auto chemistry analyzer and other belongings as humanitarian aid.”
A member of the Chinese community in Lagos, Ms Lui Koon, praised the commitment and professionalism of the doctors at the hospital in the discharge of their duty with available resources.
“I remember in 2016 the first time I came, for one of the patients to translate to English. I was invited to be the translator. I was very impressed with the friendly professor and the way they handle the patients,” said a grateful Ms Lui.
Receiving the medical equipment, the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Professor Wale Oke, represented by the Acting Director of Clinical Services and Training, Dr Olatunde Odusote commended the Chinese Consulate General in Lagos for the gesture saying that the hospital would put them to good use for all Nigerians.
“It’s very heartwarming to see that you appreciate what we are doing for the Chinese community in Lagos and Nigeria at large and for you to also want to partner with us, to give back to us, to help us to provide optimal care and we are very appreciative of that. In a way it shows that the quality of care offered by Nigerian doctors and hospitals is not as bad people want us to believe”, said Odusote.
The Coordinator of the Critical Care Unit of the hospital, Dr Ade Tinubu, said the gifts came as a result of the friendly relationship between the hospital and the Chinese community.
He said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Consul General for the magnanimity and the giving spirit in considering us. We know that what has been given to us is something that will be beneficial to patients that we take care of.”
This is not the first time the Chinese Consulate-General in Lagos would donate medical equipment to a Nigerian hospital. Last year, a donation of forty digital ultrasound diagnostic machines was made to the Ondo State government.
“We must deny these groups the undue publicity they crave,” the minister said.
