Celebrities who made fashion statements at AFRIMA

Though the 2017 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has come and gone, the memories of the event continue to linger in the minds of African musicians, especially the award winners and music lovers. The event, which was held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, had in attendance prominent musicians from all over the African continent.

Despite the fact that AFRIMA is an avenue to showcase the best of African music and culture, it is also a time when African celebrities make fashion statements on the red carpet. It was, therefore, not surprising to see our A-list artistes strutting on the red carpet in their   beautifully designed attires. While some celebrities were dressed in body-revealing clothes others were moderately dressed.

Some of the stars who made fashion statements at the event were Bonang Matheba, T-Boss, Simi, Sheyi Shay, Olajumoke, Miss Nigeria, Chioma Obiadi, Waje, Chinedu Ikedieze, Ras Kimono, Eniola Badmus and Tallulah Dohert, Check out the pictures of some of your favourite celebrities.

8 rules for black-tie events

Be open-minded: It’s important to be open and try new things. After all, a special occasion should be just that: special. So if you never wear bold colours, give them a try. If you always wear strapless, try a cap sleeve. You just might be surprised at the outcome.

Foundation pieces make or break a dress: Even before you buy (or rent!) the dress, make sure that you can find undergarments that will work for you.

Remember the little things: If you’re wearing a clingy dress, do not where briefs under any circumstances. A visible panty line can be really distracting. Also, never forget to take a look at yourself from all angles, or at least ask a friend you trust to check you out.

Select a piece of statement jewelry and work around it: In most cases, it’s best to have one really bold piece of jewelry and pare down the rest of your look. For instance, if you’re wearing your hair up, or have a high neckline, you may want to wear bold earrings. In this case, you mostly likely don’t need a necklace, and if you do, make sure it’s subtle.

Your evening bag should add to your look: Even though you might not be holding your bag all night, you don’t want it to look like an afterthought. That’s not to say that you need to invest a lot of money in a bag you’ll rarely use, but it’s a good idea to have a couple basic “go to” clutches in your wardrobe: black, silver, and gold are ideal.

Be realistic about your shoes: Before you decide to go with the 4-inchers, make sure you’re able to stand for a long period of time without your feet throbbing. If you never wear heels, opt for a low 1- to 2-inch kitten heel. It’s always a good idea to spend some time at home walking in your shoes so you can find out if the height is comfortable and if any of the closures rub you the wrong way.

A fresh manicure and pedicure is a requirement: Whether you do it yourself or go to the salon, your nails should look clean if nothing else.

Don’t get too experimental with hair and makeup: If you have the time and money to experiment with your look, by all means, go for it! However, if you never wear your hair up, this is not the time to try a fancy updo. If you’re set on wearing a new look, go to someone you trust and always bring pictures of hair and makeup styles you like. It’s easier for the artist when you have a visual.

Don’t throw on just any old coat: Whether you’re willing to invest in a nice evening coat or not, make sure you take into consideration what you will wear in transit. Remember, first appearances matter.
