Caterer advises Nigerians on healthy eating habit

MRS Modupe Ademoloyo, the Principal Catering Officer 1 at the Alimosho General Hospital, Igando in Lagos State, on Tuesday urged Nigerians to consume more of fruits and vegetables for them to live longer.

Ademoloyo gave the advice at the Continuous Medical Educational Workshop organised for staff members of the hospital.

According to her, people eat more saturated fat, instead of foods rich in fibre.

“Food can be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or even the slowest form of poison depending on how one decides to take it.

“Eating should not be about filling the stomach only, but also about supplying the body with the essential nutrients needed to live a healthy life,’’ she said.

The expert noted that the essential parts of a balanced diet that people should consume include: fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy products, fats and oil.

She said these should be taken in small proportion.

She said a healthy eating habit would be beneficial for both the young and the old as it would add value to their immune systems.

“A healthy eating habit will make the body strong enough to ward off sicknesses such as constipation, indigestion, heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers.

“Also a malnourished person has more severe disease episodes and complications because his immune system is down,’’ she said.

She, therefore, advised people to make it a habit to always eat balanced meal daily saying, “You are what you eat.’’
