Cancer: NDDC sensitises Delta residents on regular check up

The importance of early detection of cancer and its subsequent treatment and management have been stressed.

Chairman, Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Mr Chiedu Ebie, who underscored the importance of a sensitization campaign in Agbor, Delta State, said the exercise was targeted at the people of the Niger Delta with the focal message of understanding the dangers of cancer.

The one-day campaign, which was held at the Cancer Treatment Centre, located at the Central Hospital, Agbor
was organised by NDDC in collaboration with the Gilbert Hill Commission.

Mr Ebie, who was represented by his aide, Dr Godwin Edozie, encouraged them about the need for regular check-ups and testing to detect the disease and begin immediate treatment.

He stressed that the campaign was not limited to the celebration of World Cancer Day, adding that NDDC was ready to partner with government agencies, groups, and individuals who showed concern for the eradication of cancer in the Niger Delta region.

He added, “The task of closing the cancer gap is a collaborative and inclusive one that requires united action. We are all in this together, facilities, care, and cost deficits notwithstanding.”

He added, “According to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, no one should have to face the challenge of cancer alone.

“Let us continue to show empathy, care, love, and support for cancer patients and survivors as we create more awareness and advocacy for better service delivery.”

He called on individuals to always go for screening in order to know their cancer status, explaining that screening was safe and cost-effective, even as prevention remained the better option.

One of the resource persons, Dr. Ngozi Maduka, Medical Director, Central Hospital Agbor, corrected the erroneous impression that sucking of breasts by male counterparts reduced the chances of breast cancer in women.

She explained that breast-feeding by nursing mothers could reduce the occurrence.

According to her, the cancer testing and treatment centre is now located at the Diagnostic Centre in Owa Alero, and the people of Ika and its environs no longer need to travel far distances for treatment and testing.
