CABS-TV partners Wikimedia User Group to host 2022 Africa Social Media Forum

Published by

The Center of Africa Broadcasting System (CABS-TV), has partnered with Nigeria’s leading educational content developer, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, to host the 2022 Africa Social Media Forum, the first of its kind on the African continent.

AbdulRasheed Abubakar, CEO of CABS-TV, made the announcement at Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, saying, “I am thrilled to officially announce a new project in the long-term cooperation between CABS Television and Wikimedia User Group Nigeria.”

The two television and content development firms have collaborated to share information on young people’s positive use of social media in order to build a better and more sustainable future for all.

Mr Olaniyan Ishola Olushola, President of Wikimedia User Nigeria, stated that the collaboration with CABS Television is highly significant and unique in light of the growing bad use of social media platforms by young people across Africa.

Olaniyan went on to say that Wikimedia User Group Nigeria is eager to work twice as hard to save young people and improve their mindset of using social media positively to help their future and obtain value for their chosen career.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Abubakar stated that: “One day, I was watching Nigeria news, and saw several young men who were claimed to have slain a young lady for money rituals detained and paraded by the Nigerian police force..

“When asked who taught them how to do the money ritual, they replied they saw it on Facebook.

“This was incredibly unsettling and depressing, and it made me realise how important it is to engage and educate young people about the positive use of social media.

“Today’s generation is desperately trying to make some sense out of their lives and out of the world. As such, they are lost in the disillusionment of the good life – we are living in a world of mass media that daily exposes society’s innate hypocrisy, contradictions, and the apparent failure of almost every facet of our social life.”
