MUSWEN President
THE Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has expressed concern that some members of the political class are using the health of President Muhammadu Buhari as a means to achieve selfish ends, saying “politics should not rob us of our humanity.”
Dr Sakariyau Babalola, the president of MUSWEN, which is the umbrella body for all Muslims, Muslim organisations, institutions and communities in the six states of the South-West, in his address, at the weekend, in Ibadan, Oyo State, at MUSWEN’s third General Assembly, called for restraint on the part of all and display of compassion as the president tries to return to good health.
Beyond the state of the president’s health, Dr Babalola observed that there had been “modest” improvements in the state of the nation but noted that the president still needed the support of all citizens in his battle against corruption.
“Corruption, without a doubt, has been a major factor that has not allowed this giant called Nigeria to claim its rightful place in the comity of nations. Therefore, if we all desire a better future for Nigeria and Nigerians, we must all resolve in unison that the fight against corruption is a battle for the survival of the nation,” he added.
In his submission, the keynote speaker, Professor Lai Olurode of the Lagos State University (LASU) advocated what he called proportional representation in making the politics of the country more effective.
According to him, the politics of the country, since the post-independence era, has been rendered ineffective because it is a practice of winner takes all.
He called for the institution of a system wherein political parties that participated in a general election would be entitled to making contributions in appointments into the cabinet and other official positions based on the percentage of the votes they scored in the election.
Also the national president of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Reverend Dr Felix Omobude, has advised Nigerians to desist from politicising the health status of President Mohammadu Buhari saying Nigerians should recognise the fact that President Buhari is human and needs the sincere prayers of all well-meaning Nigerians.
Dr Omobude in a press statement endorsed by his media aide, Deacon Ralph Okhiria, on Monday, in Benin City, expressed displeasure over the manner many Nigerians were making mockery about the Nigerian President’s health status.
According to the PFN Leader, “it is ridiculous, embarrassing and an ungodly act for Nigerians to be uncomplimentary remarks about the health status of the President of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari.
