Buhari approves Otegbayo’s appointment as UCH CMD

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of  Professor Abiodun Otegbayo as the new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State.

Professor Otegbayo is taking over from Professor Temitope Alonge, who has completed his tenure as UCH CMD.

Professor Otegbayo hails from Otan-Ile in Obokun Local Government in Ijesaland, Osun State. He graduated from the University of Ibadan College of Medicine in 1989.

After graduation, he underwent Residency training in Internal Medicine at UCH, and became a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in 1998. He further subspecialised in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with further trainings at the Johann-Wolgang Goethe Hospitale in Germany in 2000, and the University of Tel-Aviv in Israel in 2002.

He obtained his Msc and PhD in Chemical Pathology/Immunology at the University of Ibadan in 2003 and 2011, respectively. Currently, he is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (FACG) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Glasgow).

His academic interest focuses on Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has done extensive research and clinical works in acute and chronic liver diseases, particularly in viral hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. He has over one hundred peer-review publications.

He was the maiden Editor–in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Prime Medics of the Journal of the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

He is a member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Gastroenterology. He has held administrative positions that include: The head of Department of Medicine, UCH; Director of Clinical Services, Research and Training, UCH; The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, UCH; Head of Department of Medicine at Babcock University and Babcock University Teaching Hospital.

He was World Bank Consultant to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Sierra Leone, and later, the maiden Chief Medical Director, University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex, Freetown.

Professor Otegbayo currently serves as a Distinguished Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and University College Hospital, Ibadan.

He is married to Bolanle Otegbayo, PhD, CFS (Associate Professor, Food Science and Technology) and Director of Research, Innovations and Strategic Partnership at Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State. They are blessed with great children.
