PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, approved the appointment of Dr Faisal Shuaib as the Executive Secretary of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA).
A statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, noted Dr Shuaib, a medical doctor and public health specialist, is currently a Senior Programme Officer (Africa) for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) at Seattle, United States.
It said at the BMGF, Dr Shuaib was responsible for developing and implementing strategies on polio outbreak response activities in Africa.
Prior to joining the foundation, Dr Shuaib coordinated Nigeria’s successful response to the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as the Incident Manager of the Ebola Emergency Operations Centre in 2014.
He was also a member of the six-man panel established to assess the response of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to the global Ebola outbreak in 2014 and provided technical advice to the Federal Ministry of Health and NPHCDA in areas of immunisation and polio eradication activities between 2012 and 2015.
Dr Shuaib had in the past also worked as a research associate at the University of Alabama.
In a separate statement issued by Shehu, the president congratulated Chief John Nwodo on his election as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the pan-Igbo sociocultural organisation and assured him of support.
It expressed the president’s belief that Chief Nwodo “is eminently qualified for the job given his long years of distinguished service to the nation.”
The statement added: “As Chief Nwodo prepares to settle down with his team to implement his vision for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the President appeals to Ndigbo as well as the wider community of Nigerians to support the new leadership to fulfil their mandate in these challenging times.”
It said the president looked forward to working with the new leadership, and assured Ohaneze Ndigbo that his administration would continue to be a partner-in-progress in implementing suggestions, measures and programmes to advance the unity, development and prosperity of Nigeria.
The president wished the Nwodo-led Ohaneze Ndigbo a peaceful and prosperous tenure.
