Bricklayer docked for allegedly chopping off man’s thumb

A 48-year-old man, Gbenga Odebiyi, who allegedly chopped off a man’s right thumb, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Odebiyi, a bricklayer who resides at No. 3, Idowu Odebiyi St., opposite Ipaja market, Lagos, is facing a charge of causing grievous harm, the offence he denied committing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb.6, about 11: a.m. inside a building in Ipaja, Lagos.

Eruada said the accused accosted and physically assaulted the complainant, one Mr Adewumi Oladosu because he refused to give him N200.

“The accused begged the complainant to give him N200, which he refused.

“Odebiyi gave Oladosu a bite and chopped off his right thumb which caused him an open injury.

“The complainant sustained an injury following the bite he received from the accused during an argument,” he told the court.

Eruada said the offence contravened Section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused N 50,000 bail with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until March 7 for further hearing. (NAN)
