THE West African Examinations Council, WAEC, on Tuesday, in Lagos, released the first series and second edition of the January\February West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, WASSCE, organised for private candidates for this year.
A total of 11, 721 candidates sat the examination, out of which only 3,102(representing 26.08%) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects including English language and General mathematics. 17.50% of the total candidates who sat the last year edition of the diet obtained similar results.
The Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, announced the release of the results at a press conference in Yaba, the headquarters of the examination body, saying out of the total candidates who sat the exam, 11, 686 of them (representing 98.27%) had their results fully processed and released, while only 206 candidates (representing 1. 73%) still had a few of their subjects being processed due to errors traceable to them in the course of registration or writing the examination.

He also said cases of exam malpractice were recorded giving the total figure of candidates involved in the act to be 376(representing 3.16%), noting that the candidates were fewer than that of last year and that their cases were under investigation after which they would know their fate as regards their results, either to be released or cancelled.
Giving a further breakdown, Adenipekun disclosed that a total of 6,180 males (representing 52 per cent) and 5,712 females (representing 48 per cent) sat the exam nationwide.
Adenipekun said the performance of candidates this year compared with that of last year, though not encouraging, was better, urging all education stakeholders to brace up for improved performance in future.
He, however, said candidates could now start checking their results on the council’s website, given as www.waecdirect.org.
