BREAKING: SSANU, NASU declare 7-day warning strike over withheld salaries

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have announced a 7-day warning strike to demand the payment of four months of withheld salaries for their members following the 2022 nationwide strike.

The decision was reached during a meeting of the joint action committee of the two unions held in Akure over the weekend.

Mohammed Ibrahim, the President of SSANU, conveyed the resolution of the meeting to journalists in Abuja on Monday, emphasizing that the warning strike was deemed necessary after numerous attempts to engage with the Federal Government failed to yield the desired outcome of salary payment.

This development occurs amid recent nationwide protests by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) over the prevailing economic challenges, which have led to a significant increase in the cost of living across the country.

According to data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the inflation rate surged to 29.90 per cent in January, exacerbating the already dire situation faced by many Nigerians.

The escalating prices of essential goods and services have sparked protests, particularly in the North-East region, where residents have been seen looting food warehouses and trailers. The Department of State Services confirmed these incidents on Friday.
