BREAKING: Shiites protesters clash with police again in Abuja, 5 arrested

Published by

Protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shiites, have clashed again with the Police at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, Thursday morning.

However, five of the protesters were apprehended by the police operatives who fired gunshots and tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters.

The situation caused panic among workers, commuters and motorists who had to flee for safety, as the rampaging followers of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, took to the streets to express their grievances against the continued incarceration of the leader by the government.

Hundreds of the members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMIN , began yet another deadly protest in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, early Tuesday morning with several gun shots being heard around the Federal Secretariat.

Consequently, stern looking armed Military , Police, Department of State Services, DSS and other Security Force’s personnel swiftly moved out and sealed off the three arms zones of the FCT.

The three arms zones of the Federal Capital Territory plays host to the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly, the Appeal Court , Supreme, Eagles Square and the Federal Secretariat.

A top military officer told the Tribune Online in confidence that the action became necessary to prevent the repeat of the Tuesday incident during which the members of the Islamic sect invaded the National Assembly

The members of the dreaded sect were chatting different songs: “free our leader, Free El-Zakzakky” and unprintable words against the administration of President Muhammodu Buhari.

Shiites members had, on Tuesday, invaded the National Assembly Complex throwing stones and injuring three police men who were later hospitalised.

The invaders stormed the complex at about 1.30 p.m., demanding the release of their leader Ibrahim El Zakzaky who has been in detention for about four years.

The protesters forced their way through the first gate near the Federal Secretariat and headed to the main building where they clashed with security operatives.

Some vehicles’ screens were broken with stones in the process, resulting in the closure of the second gate by security agents who placed restriction on movement in and out of the building.
