BREAKING: Reps okay Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers

Published by

Following a declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, the House of Representatives has passed and adopted the proclamation through a voice vote with 243 members in attendance.

The House, on Thursday, also made recommendations to the proclamation by the President.

The House, following the passage of the proclamation, recommended that a national committee should be set up to mitigate and restore peace back to Rivers State.

Also, the House wants the National Assembly to take over the activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a period of six months for which the President suspended the lawmakers.

Tribune Online

reports that Tinubu, during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, declared an emergency rule in Rivers and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and State Assembly members. However, these proclamations were subject to confirmation by the National Assembly.

While attributing his decision to the protracted political crisis in the state, the President in his broadcast also appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator, to manage the affairs of the state with immediate effect.
