Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Usman has charged the Delta state command to brace up against the challenges posed by the proscribed Indigenous People’s of Biafra (IPOB) in the state.
Addressing men and officers of the state police command in Asaba as part of his working visit to the state on Monday, IGP Baba Usman said there was the need to get prepared and deal with any crime or criminality to ensure that they are brought to book.
The IGP who was reacting to some of the challenges facing the command, including IPOB activities and herdsmen attacks raised by the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ari Bali noted that the proximity of Anambra to Asaba makes it susceptible to aggressions from the eastern part of the country.
Other challenges of the command, according to the Commissioner include a shortage of arms and patrol vehicles.
However, the police chief did not respond to the challenge of incessant farmers/herders clashes in the state.
“It is expected that whatever affect Anambra may likely affect Asaba, the state capital. There are spillover of agitations or demonstration from Onitsha to Asaba.”
“That is why you need to get prepared to deal with any crime or criminality to ensure that they are brought to book.
“You need to brace up to IPOB challenges because it is a proscribed organization and treat them as such.”
He noted that #ENDSARS started in the state even as he advised the officers to exhibit a high level of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
He said though stop and search should be thorough, there is the need to be selective and ” have a level of suspicion before stopping and searching any vehicle.”
He commended the command for its efforts in fighting criminality in the state adding that it has to do more for the best so that citizens can go about their duties without any fears or molestation.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ali had earlier disclosed that 253 assorted arms and 8,756 ammunition were recovered from criminals since he assumed office last year.
According to him, 217 robbery suspects, 194 kidnap suspects, 912 suspected cultists and 94 murder suspects were arrested during the period.
