Borno NUJ chairman advocates enhanced radio infrastructure

The Chairman of the Borno Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Amb. Abdulkareem Haruna, has called for increased investment in radio infrastructure, including improved coverage and accessibility, particularly in remote and underserved areas, as the state recovers from over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.

This call was contained in a press statement signed by the council secretary, Ali Chiroma, and made available to journalists in Maiduguri on Thursday.

He noted the pivotal role of radio broadcasting in the state’s recovery, saying it serves as a crucial lifeline for residents rebuilding their lives. “Radio has been indispensable in Borno,” said Haruna.

“It has provided vital news and security updates, facilitated reconciliation efforts, delivered educational programmes, and given a voice to the voiceless. Our radio colleagues have worked tirelessly, often under dangerous conditions, and we commend their courage and commitment.”

“As the world marked World Radio Day 2025,” the statement explained, “the NUJ highlighted radio’s continued importance in disseminating vital information, fostering dialogue, and empowering communities ravaged by conflict.”

According to the statement, under the theme “Radio and Climate Change: A Powerful Tool for Climate Action,” the NUJ stressed that in Borno, radio’s impact extends beyond environmental concerns.

The NUJ acknowledged the numerous challenges facing radio journalists in the state. They called for increased investment in radio infrastructure, including improved coverage and accessibility, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

The council also demanded enhanced training and capacity building for journalists to equip them with the skills needed for effective reporting.

Furthermore, the NUJ emphasised the critical need for greater protection for journalists, citing the precarious environment in which they operate. They also advocated for increased support for community radio initiatives, recognising their vital role in amplifying grassroots voices.

The council stressed the importance of promoting ethical journalism practices to ensure accurate and responsible reporting.

“We urge all stakeholders – government, civil society organisations, and the public – to continue supporting radio broadcasting in Borno State,” Haruna stated.

“Ensuring the safety and security of journalists is paramount. We must also invest in the sector to ensure its sustainability and effectiveness.”

The NUJ reiterated its commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to build a vibrant and responsible media landscape in Borno, where radio continues to play a vital role in informing, educating, and empowering communities.
