Borno govt set to implement new minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed confidence in Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s commitment to implementing the new minimum wage of 70,000 Nigerian Naira.

Borno NLC Chairman, Inuwa Yusuf, revealed this in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune in Maiduguri on Sunday.

Yusuf stated that during a meeting three days ago, the governor assured them of his commitment to adopting the federal government’s agreed minimum wage.

He mentioned that NLC members in Borno received their monthly salary for this month just two days ago and are expecting the governor to fulfil his promises regarding the minimum wage.

With the new local government autonomy, the NLC chairman called on Borno State local government chairmen to approve the new minimum wage for their workers, who are currently receiving below the expected standard.

He also urged NLC members from Borno State to pray for the betterment of the situation.

Yusuf explained that the federal government’s agreement to increase the minimum wage comes after the president’s initial proposal to increase fuel prices, which the NLC declined due to concerns about the potential hardship it would cause their members.

He added, “With the federal government’s agreement to increase the minimum wage, the NLC is optimistic about the development.”

He also mentioned that the president has assured that the minimum wage review process will now occur within 2-3 years instead of the initial five years, a move seen as a positive step towards addressing the welfare of workers.
