Borno govt bans street hawking in Maiduguri

The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board (BSUPDB) has announced a ban on street hawking and other illegal activities in the Maiduguri metropolis.

In a statement issued on Friday, the General Manager of the board, Mr Limán Mustapha, clarified that the decision was made in accordance with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.

The ban specifically targets street hawking, tricycle operations, and generator mechanics around the Post Office and Monday Market areas of Maiduguri.

The board further prohibited activities on pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts, as well as the sale of engine oil on road reservations.

Also, the dumping of sand or building materials, the mixing of cement on the roads, and the construction of boreholes by the roadside have also been banned.

Mustapha urged those affected by the order to vacate the occupied sites immediately. He warned that the board would take legal action, including arresting and prosecuting defaulters in a court of law.

He also called on residents and business owners to comply with the new directives to avoid legal consequences.

He said partly, “The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law.”
