Book piracy affecting education, publishing sector in Nigeria — NPA

The Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA) has said the activities of book pirates are hurting the education sector, as well as the publishing industry in the country, just as it called for all hands to be on deck to curb the efforts of the pirates.

This was made known recently when NPA, led by its president and chairman-in-council, Alhaji Lukman Dauda, paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Alhaji Lukman, while speaking, said pirates do not bother about the quality of books they produce, the intellectual efforts of the authors or the investment of publishing firms, so they can afford to sell at ridiculous prices and still make money, meaning they reap where they do not sow.

He said the visit to the NUJ was in continuation of the NPA’s advocacy and visibility efforts to tackle the activities of book pirates in the country, just as he called on journalists to join the war against piracy.

While speaking, chairman of the NUJ, Oyo State Council, Mr Demola Babalola, promised that journalists in the state would continue to propagate the dangers of piracy to the education sector and publishing industry.

Among those on the entourage of the NPA were Mr Seinde Ogunniyi, Vice President; Mr Olakunle Sogbein, Deputy President, West; Mrs Folakemi Bademosi, Council Member, Chief N.O. Okereke, former President of NPA; Mr Emmanuel Abimbola, Executive Secretary.
