RENOWNED Professor of Oral History and former Commissioner for Education in Oyo State, Professor Bolanle Awe, has charged government at all levels to make recourse to literary and debate society in re-engineering the sagging educational system in the country.
She also counseled students in all schools to explore the inherent benefits in literary and debate society to aid their learning activities.
Professor Awe made the call during a debate competition organised for secondary schools in Ibadan by the Dorcas Oke Hope Alive Initiative (DOHAL), a charity arm of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries, held at the Precious Cornerstone University Campus 1 auditorium at the weekend.
Mrs Awe who was also the chairperson, board of trustees of DOHAL Foundation, commended the choice of the topic of the competition, ‘Who Should Invest in Education, Parents or Government?’
Recalling her early involvement in Literary and Debate Society while at St. Anne’s College, Molete, Ibadan, she reiterated the importance of the society in galvanising the present day students’ interests in teaching and learning.
Awe commended the initiator of the DOHAL, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, and his wife, Victoria, for establishing the foundation to add value to the society.
Equally, chairman of the occasion, Professor Ben Emikpe, said parents and the government have roles to play in the development of Nigeria’s educational system.
Executive director of DOHAL, Dr. James Oloyede, enjoined the students to develop a meaningful reading culture, lamenting that the reading habits of students have become disheartening, a development he further noted has affected the overall success of education in the nation. “Up till now, the circumstance surrounding the reason the student took the substance is shrouded in mystery. However, the management is investigating the case to get to the root of the matter.
“The case of another attempted suicide by an ND student of Estate Management as reported in the same story is also untrue and baseless.
