In another wave of terror, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly attack on the quiet communities of Banga and Larh in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Tuesday night, leaving at least six people feared dead and one person missing.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the attackers stormed the area under the cover of darkness, unleashing violence that claimed lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
Among the victims was a local vigilante who died after a bomb detonated during efforts to repel the attackers. In Banga, two men were shot dead, while a woman reportedly died after falling amid the chaos of the attack. In nearby Larh, two more residents were killed under circumstances yet to be fully clarified.
A police van dispatched from Garaha was also targeted during the onslaught. The vehicle was destroyed by an improvised explosive device (IED), but all officers had exited moments before the blast, narrowly escaping death.
Residents described the incident as “heartbreaking,” lamenting the continued threat to their lives and property. Many expressed frustration over the lack of adequate security and called for urgent government intervention.
“We’re losing our people to these monsters, and now even those protecting us are targets,” said a community member who requested anonymity.
As at the time of this report on Wednesday, a young boy from Banga remains missing while his phone reportedly rings without response, fueling fears of possible abduction by the extremist, a hallmark of their operations.
An unexploded bomb was also discovered in Banga, prompting urgent calls for bomb disposal unit to avert further disaster.
This incident comes just two months after similar attacks in Kwapre and other Hong villages, reinforcing fears that Boko Haram and its offshoot, ISWAP may be regaining strength in northeastern Nigeria.
Confirming the attack, Chairman of Hong local government area Mr. Umar Wa’ganda said six persons have confirmed dead while one is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
Meanwhile, residents continue to voice frustration over the lack of adequate security presence. “We feel abandoned,” one villager said. “These attacks keep happening, and we’re left to fend for ourselves.”
