Boat mishap claims eight lives in Delta

A boat mishap at Bennet Island in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, has claimed the lives of a toddler and seven others, with 20 others missing.

The ill-fated speedboat was carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony.

Sources said the boat collided head-on with a submerged log, causing it to capsize.

The boat was also reported to be travelling at high speed when the accident occurred last weekend.

The collision reportedly threw many passengers overboard into the waters.

Unfortunately, many of them were said to be unable to swim or were not wearing life vests.

As a result, they drowned almost immediately after being flung into the river, while others went missing in the murky waters.

The lifeless body of the one-year-old child was discovered hours later, floating along the creek.

Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts have been launched, but the fate of the missing passengers remains uncertain.

Further developments regarding the tragic mishap have not been confirmed by relevant officials as of the time of filing this report.
