Black Sunday in Bauchi as man, wife, two children, 9 others perish in road accident

It was a black Sunday in Bauchi following the tragic death of 13 people including a man, Late Jamal Ahmed Yari, his wife, Amina and their two children as well a younger sister to the wife who were all killed in a ghastly automobile accident along Bauchi-Gombe road.

According to information from one of the relatives of the Yari family involved in the accident, Zainab Sabitu, the deceased were Jamal Ahmed Yari, his wife Hajiya Amina, her younger sister, Hajiya Zahra’u B.B Dogo and their two children Adnan and Affan.

She narrated that the accident victims were returning back to Bauchi from Gombe State when the sad event occurred adding that their funeral prayers was held later on Sunday at the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu.

The death of the five people in the family on the same day has thrown the royal house and residents of the town into grief as all the dead persons are promising young people.

While confirming the accident, the Bauchi State Police Command through the PPRO, DSP Kamal Datti Abubakar stated that: “With a heavy heart, the Bauchi State Police Command regret to inform the general public that, there was a fatal motor vehicles accident today, Sunday 31/03/2019 at about 1430hrs along Bauchi – Gombe road involving two vehicles, a Sharon bus loaded with 13 passengers and a Toyota Camry loaded with six (6) passengers.”

The PPRO in the press statement explained that the accident occurred when the two vehicles that were coming towards opposite direction and on reaching a point along the road, they had a head-on collision, as a result of which all the 19 passengers from the two vehicles were injured.

He further explained that: “The victims were then immediately moved from the scene by security agents with the assistance of good samaritans to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, on reaching the hospital thirteen (13) passengers were confirmed dead by the medical doctor while six (6) are still on admission.”

“Meanwhile, up to the time of this release, names and address of some of the victims are still unknown. It is on this note, the Command calls on the members of the public who their family member(s) travelled along that road and are still unable to reach them to check at the ATBU Teaching Hospital please,” Abubakar further stated.

Efforts to get the report of the accident from the State Command of the FRSC proved abortive as calls put through to the Corps’ officials was not positive as at the time of the report.
