This year, organisers of Africa’s most prestigious Awards, Africa Magic’s viewer’s choice awards, AMVCA’S have again proven that they are ready to keep the entertainment scene buzzing with rave as they have released the top nominees for the 2017 edition of the event.
Rita Dominic, Bimbo Akintola, Chioma Akpotha, Uche Jombo, Omoni Oboli, and Funke Akindele are in close shave with each other for the best Actress award in different categories, while RMD, Ramsey Nuoah, Olu Jacobs, Femi Jacobs and Gregory Ojefua top the list for the best Actor Award.
Also for the Best Movie from west Africa, ‘The CEO ‘ by Kunle Afolayan, 76, Oloibiri, ‘A trip to Jamaica’ are up for nominations while Mrs Right Guy and Happiness is a four-Letter word, All about love and Vaya , lead the nominees list for the Best Movie award from South Africa.
Announcing the nominees was the duo of popular Nigerian actress and TV presenter, Mitchelle Dede, and renowned Kenyan actor, radio presenter and TV host Fareed Khimani during a special live broadcast which aired on all Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv.
While Speaking to journalists, the Regional Director of MNet West Africa, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, said that they made selections from the entries they got. She maintained that if a movie was not entered, despite being a great production, it would not be shortlisted.
Despite being a regional ceremony, the MNET boss insisted that having AMVCA in Lagos was not a big deal, insisting that all that matters was having a successful show.
While refusing to disclose veterans to be honoured this year, she insisted that it was in their tradition to disclose names at the Awards ceremony. At the last edition, late Aunty Bukky Ajayi and Sadiq Daba were honoured, which was quite emotional. Few months later, Bukky Ajayi died.
she stated, “If you have been following AMVCA, you will know that we do not announce the names of people we plan to honour until that day. That has been our tradition and the beauty of it.” She however, added “Voting for the AMVCAs opens from midnight on Wednesday, 14th December 2016 and closes on the 24thFebruary, 2017.
