Between EFCC and Yahoo boys in Nigeria

I am highly disturbed about how the Nigerian youths who are expected to be the leaders of tomorrow are being arraigned before the court on a daily basis for offences of cybercrime and internet fraud. Of a truth, I feel uncomfortable seeing our youths plead guilty in the interest of plea bargain. I am a Nigerian youth and a lawyer; it would be very interesting to advise our youths to shy away from scams.

There is petty work to do for unemployed youths instead of turning to a life of crime and fraud. However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also has a lot to do in the area of publicity; it is high time the commission set up a powerful committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of enlightening our youths in both public and private schools on why they should shun cybercrime.

There is no advantage in becoming Yahoo boys in life. One needs to value his reputation. My message to those who are warming up to dupe Americans, Germans, Britons and other foreigners is to find time to visit the Federal High Court in Ibadan to witness how the EFCC is sending the Yahoo boys to Agodi Prison.

Nigerian youths should stop tarnishing their images and that of the country by engaging in cybercrime. Patience is the hallmark of life; it took President Muhammadu Buhari several years of struggling before he could become our president. The Nigerian youths must know that there is hope and a bright future for them. It is absurd to see some parents buying laptops for their children to commit cyber crimes.

I can’t say what must have made some parents to encourage their children to become internet fraudsters but it is time to join hands to speak against this vice. The get rich overnight syndrome is the focus of most youths; they want to ride exotic cars without having jobs. I wonder why an unemployed youth thinks riding a N5 million car is the ultimate. There is a need for reorientation; youths should desist from scams before they get caught.
