The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) has postponed the local government election initially scheduled for July 6 to November 16.
Dr John Chen, the Chairman of the Commission, announced this during a press briefing in Makurdi on Friday.
He attributed the postponement to logistical constraints and the need for additional time to adequately prepare and procure the necessary election materials.
Dr Chen stated that the commission is developing a revised timetable to include all critical activities and allow sufficient preparation time.
He also mentioned that the process of rescheduling has begun, with today marking the issuance of the election notice in accordance with Sections 103 (3) and 150 of the Electoral Act 2022 as amended.
Detailed guidelines will be released in due course.
Dr. Chen appealed to all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to cooperate with the commission to ensure the election is free and fair.
