Benue govt to demolish dilapidated school structures

Director General of Benue State Education Quality Assurance Agency, BEQA, Dr Terna Francis on Thursday said that the agency will collaborate with the state urban development  to demolish dilapidated  school structures across the state.

Terna  stated  this when members of the Correspondents’ Chapel paid him a courtesy visit on his office in Makurdi just as he lamented at the high number of dilapidated schools structures in the state.

According to him most of the schools have structural defects and are also, sited in unconducive environment.

He said, “A Primary School is supposed to be built over one kilometer apart and Secondary School two  kilometers .

” But unfortunately, these building descriptions are not followed and then you have a situation where people convert their three bedroom apartment into school.

The DG said the agency is already collating data of such schools in the state.

“Right now, we are gathering data about such illegal school structures and equally embarking on sensitization. We are telling parents to withdraw their wards/ children from those schools by July because the bulldozer will bring such schools down”, he said.

Dr Francis who decried the rots in education sector in the state promised that the administration of Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia is poised to stamp out those rots.

While stating that there were dearth of teachers in schools across the state, the DG promised that government will  will soon embark on recruitment of teachers.

According to him, “we are waiting for approval from the Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia to commence massive recruitment of quality teachers across the State.

“The situation about teachers is very bad and we want to employ more quality teachers. This will be done soon. The Governor is taking seriously the welfare of teachers.

“The state government is planning to put in place a  loan scheme for teachers and their children can study abroad. The Governor wants all teachers to own houses during his tenure”.
