Beauty at all costs? Discover 5 dangers of using fake cosmetics

One of the menaces happening in our society is fake products. This is not just only about food, but what we use on our bodies. It is no longer news in Nigeria that fake cosmetics have been on the rise; yet as people, we still use them. This is because for many people, anything that is affordable and available at the time of need is the original. However, we cannot overrule the dangers associated with using fake cosmetics. Using it endangers your health if you don’t know.

Despite the consistency from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) warning against inauthentic products, counterfeit cosmetics products are on the rise.

Here are some of the dangers of using fake cosmetics:

1. They are a threat to the environment

Fake cosmetics is one of the problems that contribute to environmental pollution. They are often produced in places against environmental regulations. The working conditions and factories used for production are always below the standard in terms of conduciveness. Also, the toxic ingredients used in making it lead to air and water pollution. Likewise, materials used in packaging are made from unsustainable sources.

2. You can get infected

Over the years, fake cosmetics have been found to contain bacteria, and fungi — not healthy to the human body. Eyeliners and mascaras created with harmful chemicals can cause redness, swollen eyes and loss of vision in severe cases. Bad lipstick can lead to swollen, cracked lips and other infections.

3. It can cause skin irritation

Skin irritation is quite common. It is usually the symptoms that occur after using a fake cosmetic. It could be itching, pimples, swelling, dark spots and redness. Severe cases can lead to serious skin conditions. You can’t be sure if what you’re going through with your skin is not a result of bad cosmetics; that’s why it is good to pay attention to yourself and consult your doctor if the situation gets out of control.

4. It can damage your organs

The chemicals used in producing inauthentic cosmetics can damage your organs. When the ingredients used absorb completely into your skin, they accumulate inside your body and then disrupt the organs. It is possible not to detect anything early. The common dangerous ingredient used for cosmetics is “mercury”. It is highly toxic and has a poisonous effect on the skin. It can damage the nervous system, and kidneys and cause rashes.

5. Your lips can be damaged

If you use lipstick that contains harmful ingredients such as lead, there is a possibility your lips can be damaged. Too much of it in cosmetics can lead to what’s called “lead poisoning”. The digestive system and respiratory organs are usually affected, causing vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation.
