A man, Muyideen Akinyemi, has approached Ojo Oba/Mapo Grade C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of his eight-year-old marriage to his wife, Morufat Akinyemi.
Muyideen alleged that his wife was unruly, had no regards for him and his family and was always fighting him.
He, therefore, prayed the court to separate them and grant him custody of their only child.
“I’m tired of fighting with my wife every day. I’ve known no peace since I got married to her. I have always desired a blissful marriage, but my experience is the opposite, “Morufat told the court.
“Shortly after we got married, I gained admission into Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, Osun State. I explained to her that I would be shuttling between Ibadan and Ife in order to attend lectures. I also stressed that this would affect our purse. But I promised to do all I could in making ends meet.
“I felt I was talking to a reasonable person, but her attitude after this showed she was far from being one.
“Immediately I resumed lectures she became pregnant. I probably thought she felt I could meet and fall in love with another lady in school. She probably thought if there is a child between us, I would be restrained from getting involved with another woman.
“Since I knew we now have an added responsibility, I took up another job aside the business I was doing. I would travel home on Thursday and work till Sunday evening and return to school Monday morning, “he stated.
“But I realised that my best was not enough for her. She was fond of complaining about everything and anything.
“Often times she left our child uncared for and any time I called her attention to it, she would flare up and on many occasions kept malice with me till I went back to school.
“When I’m in school, she would not deem it fit to call and ask after my welfare and this could go on for about two weeks. And even when I return home, she would be cold towards me and pick faults at all that I did which sometimes led to a fight between us.
“When we fight, she only feels satisfied after tearing my clothes.
“I have reported her to her mother many times but she appears not able to speak to her. There were times she shout her mother down when counseling her, “Muyideen said.
“He has said all that to gain sympathy from the court, Morufat said.
“His conscience is dead and doesn’t have any feeling for me and our child.
“He left home last year after our child who was then one month old underwent a surgical operation.
“He’s not interested in how our baby and I survive. Anytime I complain, he beats me and throws my things out. The last time he did, I went to my parents’.
“They mediated in the matter and I moved back homes. Not more than two weeks after this, he started beating me again.
“This time, he left me with a bruised and swollen face. These were the pictures I took then. (She presented them to the court president).
“I was advised to seek the intervention of the social welfare office which I did. He was asked to give me a specified amount monthly as feeding allowance for our child and me, but he was not committed to it.
“My lord, despite all he has done, I still choose to stay in the marriage because I don’t wish to have children for different men, “she said.
The court president, Chief Ademola Odunade while looking at the pictures asked the plaintiff if he was responsible for the assault.
He denied hitting her in the face and explained that she had mouth infection.
Odunade, after listening to the duo, requested to have their parents in court.
He, therefore, adjourned the case till May 10 and ordered that they come along with their parents.
