Be unrelenting in praying for nation’s leadership ― Alaafin urges Nigerians

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi has charged Nigerians to be unrelenting in praying to God for wisdom and direction for the nation’s leadership.

This is as he called on privileged persons to imbibe the virtue of giving back to God through service to humanity, irrespective of their religion.

Oba Adeyemi gave this charge while commissioning an ultra-modern centre mosque donated to Kosobo Community, Oyo, by a former Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Monsurat Sunmonu.

He commended the donor, Senator Sunmonu for being a pillar of support to the entire Oyo community and others within and outside Oyo town, adding that her decision to name the mosque after her late mother is commendable.

Speaking further, the monarch urged the Islamic faithful in the country to imbibe the virtues of love and forgiveness stating that no one can claim to be a true worshipper without showing love to people around him.

He also tasked those giving bad images to Islam through their conduct and action to desist, stressing that Islam preaches peace.

Alaafin said, “Islam is a religion of peace. It is a religion of persuasion. It is the religion of preaching the fatherhood of God and for humanity. There is no compulsion in Islam.

“You are attracted or invited to Islam by persuasion, so it is not a surprise that our people took to Islam at the earliest time, because it is one of persuasion and the one that said whatever we do in life, we will atone for it in heaven.

“Yoruba people believe that there is a cause and effect and when there is wrong, there must be a remedy.

“We can only beg God to forgive us. For any Muslim to follow the tenets of Islam, he or she must like his brothers and sisters. It is a religion of peace.

“Speaking on why she is involved in charity and community development projects, Senator Sunmonu explained that her involvement was simply her own modest way of showing appreciation to God for his love and countless blessings.

She added that she named the mosque after her mother because during her days, she was a devoted Muslim Ummah who practised the religion wholeheartedly.

She called on people generally to know that there won’t be anything apart from God and that people must learn to serve him accordingly irrespective of religious differences.

“There is no any other thing and there will never be any other thing apart from God. For us to believe in God and worship him accordingly, not just being a Muslim or a Christian but you should know and do exactly the right thing. Your conscience will always tell you if you are doing the right or wrong thing.

“We have to believe in God. Everything we do on earth is part of a belief. When you steal, that means you don’t know God. When you backbite, that means you don’t know God. When you betray people, you don’t know God. Anything you do is part of believing God,” Sunmonu stated.

An Islamic cleric, Sheik Taofeeq Akeugbagold also urged the former Senator not to relent in her service to God and humanity.

Residents of Kosobo community, in their various remarks, commended the former Senator for donating the new central mosque to the community.

Other dignitaries at the event which also saw the first Jumat prayers being observed in the new mosque include, ex-commissioner, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, politician friends, associates of the donor, among others.
