A professor of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, Ralph Akinfeleye, has charged the nation’s media to be alive to their responsibility of being the watchdog of the society, as stipulated in the constitution.
Akinfeleye, who stated this at the International Conference/Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON), held recently in Lagos, expressed regrets that some media organisations failed to live up to such role in their reportage of the last general elections.
The University don explained that the duty of the media is to monitor government as stated under Section 2 of the constitution.
He also advised the media on the need to research properly before doing their write-ups, noting that the consequences of not having a thorough research is contributing to the dearth of literature in Nigeria.
“Media should conduct media studies. The consequence of not doing research is contributing to the dearth of literature in Nigeria. We must therefore reorganize ourselves to do contemporary research,” he said.
In his remarks, past President of AMCRON, Professor Eserinune McCarthy explained that the role of the association, registered in 2018, is to advance scholarship at all areas.
