Bayelsa guber: PDP condemns attacks, killing of members in Nembe

Published by

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has condemned what it called a senseless attack on its members by some machete-wielding men reported to be supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogbolomabiri Community of Nembe Local Government Area, a situation that has reportedly led to the death of one Timi Biriyai Macdonald.

The Nigerian Tribune learned that two chieftains of the PDP, identified as Timi Biriyai Macdonald and Diepreye Akrisia, were brutally attacked on Thursday night by the machete-wielding men and that one of the victims, Timi Biriyai Macdonald, was rushed to the hospital and later confirmed dead on Thursday night.

The PDP, in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the State Chairman, Hon. Solomon Aguanana, the Secretary, Hon. Gesiye Isowo, and the Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ebiye Ogoli, said the party, while sympathising with the families of the deceased and the injured, “condemns the situation whereby a political party resorts to violence, maiming, and killing or scaring away supporters of other parties.

“The PDP, to this end, strongly urges the police and other security agencies in the state to, without delay, investigate, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators of these wicked and senseless attacks on innocent citizens to serve as deterrents to others during the November 11 elections.

However, the APC has distanced itself from the attack, accusing the PDP of mobilising mercenaries with state resources to plant arms in some houses in Nembe Community as an excuse for invasion, mayhem, and killings.

In a statement signed on Thursday in Yenagoa by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, the goal of the plot was to make it extraordinarily difficult for electoral officials to gain access and intimidate supporters during the November 11, 2023, elections in Bassambiri-Nembe.
