Bayelsa govt commences work on new Yenagoa city

The Bayelsa State government has commenced work on the New Yenagoa City project, which includes the construction of an outer ring road connecting Igbogene, Etegwe, Amarata, and Onopa, as well as internal linking roads, a new State House of Assembly, and Commissioner’s quarters.

The government has urged Bayelsans to disregard unnecessary criticism from detractors who do not understand the efforts of the Prosperity Government.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Moses Teibowei, accompanied by his Information, Orientation, and Strategy counterpart, Ebiowou Koku-Obiyal, conducted a tour for journalists to inspect several projects, including the Yenagoa/Oporoma, Akaba/Okodi, and Igbogene/Onopa roads, as well as maintenance work on the Mbiama/Yenagoa road.

Teibowei explained that the state government has constructed a road around New Yenagoa City to serve as a dyke to prevent flooding.

Additionally, land has been donated to the Nigerian Navy, Central Naval Command, to build barracks for accommodation and security in the area.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the inspection tour, Teibowei said, “Today, we decided to come out for the joint inspection of various ongoing projects being embarked upon by the Prosperity Government, ably led by His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri.

“We have been to the Oporoma road and observed the level of completion of the bridge; it is progressing. As I said earlier, the piling has been completed. We also visited the roundabout, where the right section leading to the Otuan community is 2.1 km and the left section leading to Oporoma, the headquarters of the Southern-Ijaw Local Government Area.

“From there, we moved to the Akaba-Okodi road. That work is also progressing, as you have seen for yourselves. We also went to Glory Drive Phase 3, which is 7.8 km long. With an additional 2 km, we have a total of 9.8 km. The work is progressing; we just commenced the job two months ago, and already about 1.6 km has been sand-filled, partly stream-based.”

“Here we are at the new legislature quarters. We have 29 four-bedroom duplexes and one five-bedroom duplex for the speaker. Some of these are completed both externally and internally, while others are still under construction. I believe that by the end of August, we will have sand-filled the entire premises.

“If you walk within the premises, you will see where sand is being stockpiled. On the right-hand side, we have already completed some sand-filling. I can tell you that the Prosperity Government is committed to completing these projects, so we should disregard unnecessary criticisms from those who do not understand what the government is doing.

“Let me not forget to mention the dual-carrier roads we just inspected within the New Yenagoa GRA. We have six of them in total. Contracts have been awarded, payments are being made, and I strongly believe that by the end of next year, all the dual-carrier roads within this New Yenagoa GRA will be completed.

“After the dual carriage roads, the government will proceed to handle the single carriage roads within New Yenagoa City, in addition to constructing internal roads within Yenagoa. That is the plan of His Excellency. I am a servant carrying out his directives, and he strongly believes that we will never disappoint the people of Bayelsa State.

“There are a few internal roads in the old Yenagoa city, such as Osiri, Okaka, and PDP roads. We have done some reasonable work, and it is not that bad. For instance, on Saptex Road, there are some areas where we intend to redesign. Redesign in the sense that when the roads were constructed, drainages were never provided.

“We are going to carry out maintenance work on the Imbiama-Yenagoa Road, which is a Federal Government road. The Ekeremor Road is also a Federal Government road but was undertaken by the Bayelsa State Government. Without waiting for the Federal Government or prompting the Minister, we are taking our destiny into our own hands. This is why the Prosperity Government also took over the Polaku-Sabagriea Road, and we are working on it.

“If you visit that site, you will see the progress. The next time we conduct an inspection, it will include that project. It was started by the NDDC over 15 years ago, but the Bayelsa State Government has taken over and is actively working on it. We are already doing what the Minister has mentioned.”
