Bauchi NUJ, ATBUTH offer free eye screening, glasses to working Journalists

Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in collaboration with the management of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) has organized a free eye screening for its members to aid them in the performance of their professional duties.

The screening was conducted on Tuesday at the NUJ Press Center, Bauchi to coincide with the 2021 International Day of Eyesight with the theme: ‘Love your eyes’.

While speaking shortly before the commencement of the screening, Consultant Ophthalmologist at ATBUTH, Dr Shahir Bello stressed the importance of regular eye screening as a demonstration of one’s love for the eyes saying that regular screening will keep the eyes in good shape.

He added that as Journalists who are always sitting behind the screen of computers and smartphones, they need to regularly check their eyes in order to know when to get help.

Shahir Bello added that “eye care does not require age, it can come at any age, regular screening will reveal what next to do. Wearing glasses is not a sickness but a necessity particularly at your various advanced ages, you need to support your eyes to be to use them well”.

The Consultant Ophthalmologist then urged working Journalists in the state to feel free to subject themselves to the screening which he said is of great advantage to them because according to him, “with the collaboration between NUJ and ATBUTH, you will be given free screening, eyeglasses and other treatments at the facility”.

Earlier, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Umar Sa’idu said that the Council is collaborating with ATBUTH on several health areas saying that the eye screening is one of them because according to him, “a healthy Journalist is a professional and active Journalist”.

He added that “We are starting with the eye screening because the eye is the first tool of the Journalist while performing his duties. We want to be sure that all working Journalists in Bauchi state have good eyesight”.

The NUJ Chairman commended the ATBUTH management for keying into the health plans of the NUJ saying that it will go a long way in fostering cordial relationships between the two organizations.

Over 100 working Journalists were screened during the exercise and given reading glasses and other treatments free of charge.
