Bauchi, international donors to rehabilitate 2000 non-functional boreholes

Bauchi State Government has expressed its readiness to partner with international donors to facilitate the rehabilitation of not fewer than 2,000 non-functional boreholes across the state.

The disclosure was made by the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Abdulrazak Zaki while addressing a delegation from Evidence Action, an international organisation with a passion for safe water expansion and exploration.

He said that a community data sheet from the State Rural Water Supply Agency, RUWASA indicated that of the total of 10,315 boreholes available in the state, 1,982 are non-functional.

According to him, “The Community data sheet of the 20 LGAs In Bauchi state showed that 8,333 boreholes are functional while the remaining 1,982 require rehabilitation.”

He added that, “We also assure you that the government will ensure transparency in the selection of the local governments and words that will benefit from the Project.”

In his remarks, the country’s Director of Evidence Action, Pharmacist Tope Ogunbi, said that Four Local government areas would be selected shortly after water point verification.

He explained that it would involve the collection of information on key indicators like households per water point, water point type and water point functionality in one ward per each of the 4 LGAs.

He further Explained that “Selection of the 4 LGAs and the 4 wards will be determined by population size, Diarrhoea burden of children under 5 years of age, proportion and types of existing water treatment schemes and evaluation of the difference between Rural and urban water points and their Community”.
