Bauchi INEC to use 22,561 officers for elections

For successful conduct of the 2019 general elections scheduled start next month, the Bauchi State office the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pencilled down a total of 22,561 election officials to work in all the 5,416 polling units across the state.

The disclosure was made by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ibrahim Abdullahi during an interactive meeting between the commission and traditional rulers held at the state INEC headquarters in Bauchi on Monday.

According to the REC, the commission has so far achieved 80 per cent completion of preparations for the conduct of the 2019 general elections in the state pointing out that the commission has concluded arrangements with leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to provide 3, 500 vehicles that will transport election materials during the exercise.

While adding that the state has a total of 2, 488,089 million voters spread across the three Senatorial Districts of the state the REC said that, “Series of capacity building workshops are being conducted for both the Independent National Electoral Commission and support staff. The Commission has equally prepared a schedule of consultative meetings and visits with major stakeholders like the youth groups, CSOs, NGOs, PWDs etc all as a build up to ensure a successful election”.

A National Commissioner of INEC, Baba Shettima who also spoke explained that the interactive meeting was aimed at soliciting the support of the traditional rulers in order to address issues of violence and vote buying during the elections.

He expressed the commission’s commitment to remain professional and work in line with the relevant laws throughout the polls disclosing that there are a total of 84 million registered voters nationwide at present urging the traditional rulers to use their influence to enlighten the electorate to come out massively and exercise their franchise during the elections.
