Eighteen families in Bauchi who had their female children suffered one form of gender-based violence have been compensated by the Bauchi State First Lady, Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed through the Al-Muhibbah Foundation.
The families who were invited to the Government House on Saturday, received the sum of N500,000 each totaling the sum of N9m while the members of the Committee that worked on the issue received an undisclosed amount.
While presenting the money to the families, Aisha Bala Mohammed expressed concern about the issue of gender-based violence in the state assuring however that the SGBV Committee in the state is doing everything possible to curb the menace.
She stressed that the amount given to the families was not compensation for the ill done to their daughters but a form of expression of sympathy and concern to pacify them.
According to her, “We are not compensating you for what happened to your daughters but to encourage you to move on with life, get your acts together, start a business that will sustain your families.”
The First Lady added, “We have ensured that the culprits were sent to jail for various terms and they have been rehabilitated to make them responsible citizens who can be reintegrated back to society.”
Speaking on behalf of the families, one of the fathers appreciated the First Lady and expressed surprise at the gesture which he said was unexpected.
He assured them that the money would be used for the purpose it was meant for stressing that it would really go a long way to support them get out of the trauma they passed through.
