Barber allegedly beats up aunt over fetching of water

A 25-year-old barber, Emmanuel Aguzie, who allegedly cut her aunt’s hand with a knife and beat her up during a disagreement over fetching of water, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Aguzie was also accused of conducting himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by making troubles in order to avoid arrest.

The defendant, who lives at 1, Orisun Ife St. in Ayetobi, Alagbado, Lagos State, is facing a two-count charge of assault and breach of public peace.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that he, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah said that the barber assaulted Mrs Rosemary Jonathan on March 24 at 7.30a.m. at their residence.

He said that the defendant beat up and wounded his aunt who he had warned not to allow neighbours to fetch water from their compound.

Unah said that the offences violated Sections 168 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

NAN reports that assault attracts three years’ jail term while breach of public peace is punishable with six months’ imprisonment.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Fashola, granted the defendant N50,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Fashola said that the surety must be gainfully employed and have evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned to case until May 16 for mention.
