Bandits kill 102-yr-old, 15 others in Zamfara

A 102-year-old community leader, his two children and 13 others were killed by bandits who stormed Kanoma community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Eid-el-fitri.

The bandits, according to witnesses, had also injured 14 people in the attack which claimed the life of the oldest member of the community.

A resident of Kanoma town, who spoke with Saturday Tribune explained that the bandits, believed to have arrived in the early hours of sallah day (Eidil fitr), invaded kanoma community and had spent several hours shooting indiscriminately.

He told Saturday Tribune that the 102-year-old years old community leader, identified simply as Mallam Muhammed, was killed with his two children in the town.

He maintained that Mallam Muhammadu who was the oldest man and a respected community leader was gunned down by bandits’ bullets after several shootings in the area.

Confirming the incident, the Director-General, Press Affairs to Zamfara State Governor, Mallam Yusuf Idris, said 16 people were killed and 14 sustained degrees of injuries.

According to him, the governor had directed for the immediate transfer of all the victims that were admitted at Kanoma Hospital to the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, with an assurrance that he would settle their medical bills.

“The governor has assured people of the area and the state in general of adequate security measures that would bring an end to armed banditry and other criminal activities in the state”.

He said Governor Mattawalle’s administration vowed to collaborate with all well-meaning citizens of the state to end insecurity in the state.

He called on people of the state to provide government with useful intelligence reports that could assist the security agencies  in apprehending  criminals in the state.

Earlier on, the district head of Kanoma, Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed, while briefing the governor, said the bandit came in large number and shot indiscriminately which resulted to the death of 16 innocent people while 14 others sustained  injuries.
