NO fewer than 49 people were killed on Thursday evening by bandits in five communities of Faru district in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The affected communities are Tsauni, Gudan-Baushi, Gidan-Adamu, Wari and Gudan- Maidawa. While the police put the number of the dead at 35, a resident of one of the areas, Malam Buba Faru, said on Friday that the bandits, who invaded the communities riding on about 100 motorcycles, murdered 49 people.
He called on the government to arrest the worsening security situation in the areas. Faru said the bandits shot indiscriminately at the people and burned their houses and food stores.
“They shot at anyone they saw in the five communities. They also attacked farmers who were in their farmlands cultivating their crops. “So far, 49 bodies have been recovered by the residents and volunteer groups,” he said. The bodies were buried on Friday, he added.
When contacted, the spokesman of the state police command, Muhammad Shehu, confirmed that 35 people were killed by the bandits during the attacks.
Shehu said already, a joint team of soldiers, policemen and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had been deployed in the district. He added that normalcy had been restored in the area.
