Bad leadership responsible for dying nation — Catholic Priest

As Catholic faithful both in Imo State and across the country celebrated “Christ the King” to mark the end of the church’s liturgical year, leaders of the nation have been enjoined to live up to their promises.

The Catholic Priest of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, Owerri, Imo State, Rev. Fr. Charles Iregbu, gave the admonition during an exclusive chat with the Tribune Online in Owerri on Wednesday.

He said that society is dying because leaders, such as politicians, religious leaders, and heads of families, have failed to live up to their promises or manifestos.

Fr. Iregbu, a retired Brigadier General in the Military and Chief Chaplain in the Armed Forces Chaplaincy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2020, said that while some leaders are doing well by fulfilling their obligations, many are not doing well at all.

He urged those leaders who are not performing well in their various fields of endeavour to look to the people they are serving and begin to do what is expected of them.

He said, “The society is dying because leaders are not doing well. If leaders are doing well as expected of them, things will be good.”

Fr. Iregbu advised the leaders in society to equally play their part by contributing to bettering the society, while he described the last celebration of Christ the King as a beautiful one. According to him, it marks the end of the church’s liturgical year.

He pointed out that the next Sunday, Catholic churches will be entering into the first Sunday of Advent.

He explained that to mark Christ the King significantly, the church must celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King, which means that Christ is both the King of individuals, society, and the world, as the case may be.

In celebrating Christ, Fr. Iregbu advised people to look back and see how God has protected them from the beginning until now.

He said, “There is no way one has survived without God being there for the person. Some of us almost died. But we are alive to celebrate because God made it.”

The Catholic priest asserted that the celebration was purely to thank God for His protection and also to ask Him to continue guiding us in the coming year.

He said, “As King, Christ was not looking as King from the way He dressed. Because kings in the world dress cutely and prominently. Everything about Christ contradicts the whole thing in the world.”

According to him, Christ never provided food for Himself, and when He wanted to pose, He borrowed a donkey, adding that the kings of the world, when they are crowned, are crowned with gold, but Christ was crowned with a crown of thorns.

Fr. Iregbu pointed out that the entire Catholic faithful also used the celebration to showcase the King, adding that Christ is the type of King that the world actually wanted to serve with love and sacrifice.

He, however, advised the people to begin the change that society requires to be better, especially as they march toward the new year.
