Avoid wrong associations, OGITECH Rector cautions new students

Published by

The rector of the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, Dr Abiodun Oluseye, has warned newly admitted students of the polytechnic to avoid wrong association or indulging in any condicts capable of jeopardising their studentship or tarnishing the image of their parents and the institute.

Dr Oluseye handed down the warning on Thursday during the matriculation ceremony for the newly admitted 4,945 students of the polytechnic for the 2024/2025 academic session, held at the Dapo Abiodun Twin-Lecture Theatre.

The rector noted that the matriculation exercise is a formal academic tradition through which newly admitted students are officially inducted into the global community of knowledge seekers.

“The ceremony qualifies you both as a student of the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, and entitles you to claim the studentship title and all its privileges anywhere in the world,” he added.

He congratulated the newly admitted students, and advised them to guard both their admission and studentship jealously and indeed with all diligence in learning and character.

Oluseye said further: “As privileged students, your attitude, behaviour and general comportment must reflect a significant level of sensitivity to the unique opportunity which you now have.

“This requires a high sense of discipline in your study, and the determination to abide by the rules and regulations of the institution.

“I implore you all to shun acts that are capable of jeopardising your studentship in the institution.

“Let me also remind you to avoid whatever is capable of tarnishing your parents’ good name and the polytechnic’s corporate image.

“Your parents’ name took them years to build. The institution’s reputable corporate image also has also taken years and sweats to build.

“You will be wise and reasonable not to join any association or group which is not recognised by the institute”.

While stressing that the polytechnic would not condone any form of indiscipline, Oluseye said that students only wear the academic gown twice; during matriculation and convocation but that a student may however wear it the third time when facing disciplinary action.

He urged the students to strive for excellence in academics, innovations, sports, entrepreneurial skills, entertainment and creativity, among others and go ahead to make themselves and their parents proud.

Dr Oluseye added that the focus of his administration in the new year would be to invest further in infrastructure development and be more dedicated towards enhancing academic excellence in polytechnic education.
