Following the Nigerian Tribune’s report of the likelihood of a crisis brewing among officials of the Oyo State Fire Services following the attack on some of its officials in Ibadan on Tuesday by a mob during a rescue operation on Friday and allegations of poor welfare and hazard allowance, the General Manager of the Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, stated on Friday that all is under control.
He added that while it is true that officials of the agency were attacked on Tuesday, leading to one of their men being hospitalised, no tension or protests are brewing as the agency and its officers work as a team and understand that their welfare is of importance to the management.
Akinyinka, who confirmed that one of his officials is on hospital admission due to the attack, maintained that all is well within his agency, adding that the government is concerned about the welfare of its staff and understands the dangers they face in their line of duty.
He added that the government is working on the hazard allowance, adding that they have been raising it, and officials should be patient as everything is on course.
“Oyo State Government, under the leadership of Engr. Seyi Makinde is working to improve the welfare of the firefighters. I assure you that before the end of this year, reasonable things will be done. What happened on Tuesday was just unfortunate,” he said.
Speaking on allegations that he was not available to answer questions from the media, he said, “I don’t ignore press calls because we are partners in progress. If you call and I don’t pick up, send messages. “I am grateful for your interest in our organisation, which makes it easy for you to get information.”
