Attaching $5,000 to Betara an Attempt to mislead the public — Group

The North East Star has expressed concern over a report linking Rt. Hon. Mukhtar Aliyu Betara, Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to alleged cash gifts of $5,000 to lawmakers.

In a statement issued on Monday in Maiduguri, Borno State, Mallam Ibrahim Goni, Executive Director of the group, described the claim as misleading and lacking in factual basis.

“There is no evidence that Hon. Betara made any statement about lawmakers receiving $5,000 for Sallah. This appears to be an attempt to create unnecessary controversy,” he said.

The group suggested that such reports could cause friction between Betara and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

“Misinformation like this can create unnecessary distractions. It is important to focus on facts rather than speculation,” Goni added.

Goni further called for responsible journalism and urged media outlets to verify information before publication.

“Journalism should be based on facts. We encourage media practitioners to uphold accuracy and fairness in their reporting,” he said.

The North East Star also urged those behind the claims to provide verifiable evidence or issue a clarification.

“We believe in transparency and accountability. If there is any proof, it should be made public. Otherwise, it is only fair to set the record straight,” Goni said.

He reaffirmed Hon. Betara’s track record in public service and urged the public to be wary of misleading reports.
