An acute shortage of cash has affected the Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) across commercial banks in Dutse, the capital city of Jigawa State, and major cities in the local government areas.
Investigations conducted by Tribune Online in the state revealed that customers were left stranded at most ATMs, experiencing difficulty accessing cash.
Reports from the state indicate that people have been facing a shortage of cash since last week, with the situation worsening on Sunday.
Tribune Online checks at the state’s capital, Dutse, where most commercial bank branches are located, on Tuesday revealed that none of the banks had cash loaded in their ATMs.
A customer at the Union Bank branch, identified as Malam Auyakawa Sadisu, expressed, “I waited for several hours, and the banking officials informed us that their ATM was faulty, and they were working to resolve it.”
Sadisu mentioned, “We waited, becoming increasingly fatigued, but nothing changed. I left with the intention of returning later, only to discover that there was a cash problem at all the banks.”
Additionally, an anonymous staff member at one of the banks revealed, “Cash is in short supply at most banks. The amount allocated for ATMs is very limited and grossly insufficient for customer needs.”
Further investigations by Tribune Online indicated that a few customers who have connections within the banks enter the banking halls to withdraw cash.
Information also gathered by Tribune Online suggested that individuals may receive a maximum of N20,000, depending on their status and connections.
Furthermore, Tribune Online reported an increase in charges by point-of-sale (POS) operators due to the scarcity of cash in the state.
