Atiba University, Oyo, has successfully graduated 197 students from different faculties in six years while competing with other existing private universities in Nigeria, recent empirical study has revealed.
Tribune Online gathered that the progressive development ongoing in the institution is a reflection of the solid academic and administrative mentoring it had with the Obafemi Awolowo University during its takeoff in 2017 and upon which the current management under the leadership of Professor Sunday Okeniyi, the vice chancellor, has built.
So far, the university has inducted 23 graduates into the Nursing profession in Nigeria and graduated a cumulative total of 197 students from different faculties in just six years since it started academic programmes. Five of them had First Class honours.
Atiba University has also witnessed the establishment of the Centre for Yoruba Language and Culture on the campus and appointment of new leadership at the board of trustees level.
This includes the new chancellor of the university, Alhaji (Dr) Shehu Chindo Yamusa III, CON, the Emir of Keffi and the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council, His Royal Majesty, Oba Eburu of Iba land, Professor Adekunle Adeogun-Okunoye Oyedeji II, into the administrative system of the institution.
According to the vice-chancellor, the Centre for Yoruba Language and Culture will serve as a dynamic hub for intellectual exploration, cultural research, and community engagement and serve as a focal point for students, scholars, and the wider community to deepen their understanding of Yoruba language and culture through research, seminars and cultural events with an objective to contribute to the broader conversation on cultural preservation and revitalisation in the country.
Speaking further, the vice chancellor declared that all the university’s programmes presented to the National Universities Commission (NUC) for accreditation have been given full accreditation, while some came with interim.
He added that the university has entered into partnership with New Horizon Systems Solutions Limited, in its quest to fulfill the mandate of being a repository, creator and disseminator of knowledge, as well as producing highly qualified graduates equipped with core Information Communication Technology skills.
“The collaboration arrangement between ADking Foundation and the institution would centre on mentorship provision by the foundation to boost the growth and development of Atiba University and will facilitate the university’s access to international libraries across the globe.
“The synergy will also involve further partnership with some highly rated universities in the United States. This is part of our strategies towards improving the university’s repositioning and rebranding agenda,” he said.
The maiden convocation was organized for the graduating students for the 2020/2021, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023 sets respectively.
Speaking in the same vein at the occasion, the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council, Professor Adekunle Adeogun-Okunoye, expressed his determination to contribute his quota towards the development of the institution.
He promised that all efforts would be geared towards advancing the quality of students and raising leaders with unquestionable qualifications and character.
While he gave kudos to President Tinubu for signing the Students Loan Bill, Prof Adeogun-Okunoye urged the Federal Government to look into the policies that will provide equitable and fair education to all students irrespective of ownership of the institution.
The chancellor, Alhaji Yamusa, noted that Atiba University is becoming a vibrant institution of learning and that leadership of the institution would continue to embrace the vision for academic excellence, ethical leadership and holistic development of the students.
He said: “As we embark on this new chapter, let us reaffirm our commitment to the values that define Atiba University and foster an environment where intellectual curiosity thrives, where innovation is celebrated, and where each member of the university community is inspired to achieve their full potential.
The president and founder of the university, Dr James Adesokan Ojebode, (JP) attributed the progress ongoing in the university to the management of the university under the leadership of Professor Sunday Okeniyi, the vice-chancellor, and the entire university community for their tireless efforts in ensuring that the university continues to thrive and maintain its commitment to academic excellence.
“Atiba University was established to provide a conducive environment for holistic learning and personal development. The university has continually evolved to meet the changing dynamics of education as well as adding value to the community,” he said.
