ASUP tells Buhari, minister to respect court order sacking rectors

Published by

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and other relevant authorities to respect the ruling of the National Industrial Court (NIC) nullifying the appointment of five rectors in Nigeria.

The National Industrial Court, in the suit NICN/ABJ/117/2021 delivered by her Lordship Hon. Justice O.A. Obaseki-Osaghae, had said that the appointments of Prof. Edward Ntue Okey, Dr Zakari Mikailu Yau, Prof. Garba Mohammed Ngala, Prof. Edwin Onyeneje, Dr. Terlumun Utser as rectors of Federal Polytechnic Ugep, Federal Polytechnic Shendam, Federal Polytechnic Mungonu, Federal Polytechnic Ohodo and Federal Polytechnic Wannune, respectively contravened the Polytechnic Act and declared such action as a nullity.

President of ASUP, Comrade Anderson Ezeibe, told journalists at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union in Abuja that transparency indices must be met in the release of funds for infrastructure revitalisation in the sector.

In its resolutions, ASUP said, “We are calling on the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, to respect the ruling of the National Industrial Court and relieve the affected persons parading as rectors of such duties.

“We are demanding that transparency indices must be met in the deployment of funds released for infrastructure revitalisation in the sector.

“Our union demands the immediate release of all withheld third party deductions from salaries of our members.

“Our union demands that the outgoing state governments of Abia, Osun, Plateau, Benue, Edo, Ondo, Ogun and Sokoto fulfil their obligations to our members by releasing owed salaries and withheld check-off dues

“We are equally demanding the recommencement of the union/FG renegotiation process to usher in a new dispensation of staff welfare in the sector.

“Our union equally demands the conclusion of the appointment process for the rectors of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi and Yaba College of Technology as the non-conclusion of the process is undermining the smooth administration of the institutions.”
